Growing Healthy, High Yield Food – with Friends
Working with Nature
Permaculture is a method of working with nature to grow vegetables and plants in a sustainable way that supports ecosystem services. Services that are provided by nature for free such as oxygen provided from trees [7]. Â
Food production is essential and so is increasing food security. Agricultural practises have been land intensive and eroded soils. There was a ‘green revolution’ when monoculture practices were implemented in the 1970’s. These were deemed a way to increase food production, especially in wheat [21]. Now, more farmers are considering a movement towards permaculture and away from harsh fertilisers, chemicals and intensive land practises [22]. This all contributes to soil health, and a healthy soil means healthy plants [19]

Plants and Fungal Communication
Chemical signals allow root tips and fungal hyphae to recognise each other – like dating in the dark
What are Fungi?
There are more than 16,000 species of fungi in the UK alone! But what are they?
What makes a fungi and mushroom different?
The History of Fungi
Fungi and mushrooms have been around well before the dinosaurs!
They have a long history of helping plants and people.
Growing with Biofertiliser
Fungi have been found to increase crop yield by 50% and increase the nutritional value of food grown with fungi as biofertiliser [28].
Healthy Soil = Healthy Food
Soil is a finite resource, and if we look after it it will produce more food that has better nutritional value [19].
Soil is Complex
Soil is so biodiverse. Bacteria, fungi and other organisms can be found in just a spoon of soil.
Bacteria, fungi and plant roots are superheros and world creators!
